Paulist Associates are lay persons, clergy or religious who have gone through a period of formation and who make an annual promise to fulfill the expectations of being an Associate.
The Austin chapter of the Paulist Associates meets monthly to learn more about the traditions and charisms of the Paulists and share how the Holy Spirit is alive in their lives.
Many years ago (about 25, I think) I heard about a friend who was a third order Franciscan. She was a lay woman who took vows to live her life in the spirit of the Franciscans and to meet for prayer and spiritual companionship with other lay people. I found myself wishing the Paulist Fathers had a third order. One year later, they started the Paulist Associates. They envisioned a group for lay people to meet for prayer and spiritual formation in the spirit of the Paulist community. I joined about 20 people from St. Austin's and the UCC for several months of formation, and then 12 of us made promises to be the first Paulist Associates in Austin. For 25 years we have met once a month to read Fr. Hecker's writings and to reflect on how we can carry the spirit of the Paulist Fathers into our lives, families, and workplaces. It has been a beautiful journey.
