This Sunday, St. Paul observes in his Second Letter to the Corinthians that “whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.” As we take our first steps into our pilgrimage of development, we are surrounded by evidence of the change from old to new. Any change is something that often brings with it a swirl of emotions from joyful anticipation to fear. Change can be turbulent, like the great storm we hear about in Sunday’s Gospel of Mark – a storm so fierce it struck terror in the disciples. After quieting the winds and sea, Jesus asks his friends, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” What do we fear? With Jesus we need only lean on and into our faith, and trust that all will be well through the changes, choices, and challenges that lie ahead.
