There is a LOT going on this Summer at our parish/school plant.
I have attempted to compile the important dates so that you can track and plan for the various events. But I must also issue a DISCLAIMER: this is our best estimate as to how these events will occur, but they are always subject to last-minute changes. After all, we have never done this before, and given the complexity of the issues, and the number of people involved in making this happen, we can anticipate some last-minute changes. Stay tuned to the Our Property Development page for updates. Stay flexible!
July 24 - Our BIG Move It Sale was a success! Our proceeds topped $3,800 at this writing. Thanks to all those who contributed hundreds of hours prepping for the sale, and to all those who came and bought some of our treasures. THANKS!
July 26 - 30 - Church offices were CLOSED and the move to our temporary offices at 500 West MLK occurred.
Monday, August 2 – We’ll be open for business at the NEW Parish Ministry Center location at the corner of MLK and San Antonio Street. Our mailing address will remain 2026 Guadalupe Street, Austin, TX, 78705.
August 2 – 6 - We'll continue packing the rectory for that move.
Saturday, August 7 - We take possession of a temporary rectory at 4502 Caswell Avenue in Hyde Park.
August 9 – 13 - The Paulists move into the temporary rectory.
Monday, August 16 - The first day of classes at St Austin Catholic School in their temporary location at San José Parish in South Austin.
Tuesday, August 17 - We'll move all furniture from our old rectory to the new rectory.
August 18-19 - All items designated for long-term storage from school, office, and rectory will move to long-term storage on the San José campus.
Saturday, August 28 - Our church doors will open at 9 a.m. for a Prayer Service in the church beginning at 9:30 to give thanks for all the service our old facilities have given us. A reflection for the parish will be given by Mr. Michael Flahive, and for the school by Ms. Barbara Kennedy. We'll also bless the temporary Parish Ministry Center and office complex. Following the prayer service all the buildings will be open for people to visit. They will mostly be empty and somewhat trashed, but people can take markers and write memories, wishes, farewells, prayers, etc. if they wish to do so. We'll then gather under the gym for some cold refreshments and an opportunity to continue to share memories and wishes.
Tuesday, August 31 - Time TBD - We'll open the courtyard between the church and Newman Hall to those who wish to remove any bricks with their family or friends name on them. Parishioners can also take plants from the courtyard, for the plants we request a free-will donation for the Development fund. Because the removal of bricks and plants create a danger of tripping and injury, access may be limited to a certain number at any one time.
We expect the long-term lease of the property will be signed and completed with the developer, Greystar at August’s end.
Wednesday, September 1 - or shortly thereafter - the developer will take possession of the property west of the alley, and east of the alley north of the Church. At that time, they will erect a fence around the property and we will not have any access to it for the next two years. We will have access ONLY to the church.
Sunday, September 19, 1:00 p.m. - We'll have a special treat. Mr. Talmadge Smith, a lead architect with Page Architects, will give a virtual “fly-through” presentation of what our new buildings will look like both from the outside and from the inside. This presentation will be given in the church. Watch our parish website for more details.
The developer will have to re-align several utility lines, do soil testing, and other work. During that time the developer plans to allow fire and police forces to train in the empty buildings.
Finally, sometime late in November or early December, demolition of the Parish Center (gym), the playground, the elementary school, Newman Hall, Paulist Hall and the middle school, the courtyard and the rectory, will commence.
Our plan is to move back into the new parish facilities and the school June 2023. Of course, that can change due to circumstances.
Our adventure has begun! Please keep us all in your prayers. God bless!
