The Knights of Columbus has four guiding principles: Charity; Unity; Fraternity; Patriotism. Each degree (or rank) of membership takes its name from these principles. The first degree emphasizes Charity, the second degree is Unity, and so on. In the past, there were initiation ceremonies for each degree. Now everything can be done on the cellphone! A new member can become a 3rd degree Knight in about 30 minutes. Most Knights in our Council are 3rd Degree which is considered full membership and is required for leadership roles. A few go further and join the 4th degree, organized as assemblies with a separate logo (see below) and distinctive uniform. They function as the ceremonial branch of the Order doing such activities as honor guard for the Bishop, color corps at public events, or standing in respect at the funerals of members or during adoration of the Eucharist. Assemblies also help veterans at VA hospitals and raise scholarships for seminarians who will become chaplains in the armed forces. Seven (7) members of our Council are also 4th Degree Knights.
